What is Grainy Owl?

Grainy Owl

Grainy Owl is a space dedicated to analog photography and tangible images; aka prints. On the homepage, you may have noticed the rather awkward tagline “images you can feel”. While I do hope my photography evokes some sort of emotion, this is not what I mean by it. “Images you can feel” cleverly (well, I think it’s clever anyway) refers mostly to the physical print. Get it? Images you can feel? No…? That’s alright… All prints produced on this site are always 100% analog. They are captured on film, developed by me, and then printed in the darkroom.

Francisco

Grainy Owl is run by me, Francisco. I’m a San Juan-based photographer and Grainy Owl is my passion project, side hustle, and experiment. Photography, like any art, is something we are constantly learning and exploring. This space is also meant to be a place for sharing knowledge, techniques, experimentation results, mistakes, stories, and anything else related to photography. So if any of this is something you’re interested in, please take a look around and browse my print shop, galleries, and blog. I hope we can work together or exchange ideas at some point.

The Prints

The prints I sell will be unique in the sense that each batch will be limited. My commitment to you is to never sell more than 10 prints from the same negative. For commissioned work, I will obviously never make duplicates from those negatives (unless they’re for whoever commissioned the work). I also offer unique portrait sessions. There’s nothing quite like a headshot on a silver gelatin print. Don’t get me wrong, I will also scan your photos for digital sharing (film looks amazing on insta as well).

Weddings and Events

Okay, okay… not everything around here is analog. Weddings and events will be mostly digital with a few candids and portraits on film. I want to keep my services affordable and doing an event like a wedding on 100% film will be prohibitively expensive. However, I will edit the digital files to look as close to film as I can. This is both because I love the look of film, and also because I want to have one cohesive look across the actual film photos and the digital photos.

You are beautiful

Whoever you are, know that you are beautiful! Every once in a while a client would ask to edit out features they don’t like about themselves. I’m not your guy for that. I mean if it’s a pimple or something you don’t have every day, yeah, let’s edit it out! But I won’t touch your beautiful scars, wrinkles, pounds, and marks.
